“Authentic Macau in the hills above the city”
If you're looking to get away from the casinos and enjoy a more authentic Macau experience, try Hotel Guia. Rooms are arrayed around an atrium; they are well-kept but quite small. Be sure to ask for a room with a balcony. There is a very attractive rooftop bar; be sure to check out the beautiful views, especially after dark. The hotel has a nightclub; we were bothered by noise late at night. The hotel accommodated our request to change rooms, and the situation was much improved the second night. The on-site restaurant is excellent. The restaurant does not allow meals to be charged to the room, so bring Hong Kong or Macau cash with you. The hotel provides a shuttle service to the Macau/Hong Kong ferry; be sure to reserve with the front desk in advance. The historic Macau lighthouse is a short walk from Hotel Guia; a walk up the hill to the lighthouse is a great way to start the day, and you'll meet lots of local people getting their exercise.
“not bad value”
For the price, in Macau, Guia is good value. It's on top of a hill, above the majority of casinos, only a short cab ride away (cabs are very cheap). The hotel also has a free shuttle which is available on demand if you ask nicely. The rooms were small but clean, and beds were firm which I like. The major drawback was that most staff didn't speak much english at all. The hotels and casinos seem to be split in Macau between those who specifically cater for westerners (with english speaking staff) and those who don't bother. On basement level 1 is a 'nightclub', which is essentially a pole dancing strip club/brothel, but doesn't impact on the hotel as such because it has separate access from a side street. I didn't try any food in the hotel, which is strictly Chinese. Macau was great but if you're taking the ferry from Kong Kong, prepare for a LONG wait in the immigration line at the Macau ferry terminal. I waited for 90 mins behind what seemed like 2000 people. Next time I'll try flying in.
“It's interesting and inexpensive, however not much fun”
It's a good place to stay... if you are looking for a budget hotel, this is definitely a good choice. Pros: well located, cheap and clean Cons: bed is too hard, restaurant closes at 9ish.
“Affordable option”
It's nothing exceptional, but it was a good value for the money.
“Adequate”
In a quiet location away from the hustle & bustle of downtown & the large impersonal hotels.
“Not likely to go back - EVER!”
The hotel, at first glance, looks nice. But as soon as they open their mouths you just think "Oh no!" They do not speak English: they do not organise tours, the food leaves a lot to be desired........ But if you speak Cantonese, then this hotel is good value.
