"Extremely local chinese hotel. English speaking staff were far and few. Staff all hesitant and not confident to deal with foreigners so the communication was a struggle. But everyone was nice and polite. The common areas are not well maintained (i.e. lobby) so if you are looking for an upscale experience this is not your place. Most importantly the operations and management of the place is very poor. Everyone was all over the place. It was a mess. The team couldn’t manage the guests and it...

Top Tianjing Hotel Reviews

Hotel Indigo Dali Erhai by IHG

10/10 Excellent

"It’s a five stars hotel. We stayed in high floor with beautiful lake view. The staff were very friendly and helpful."

Hilton Garden Inn Dali Ancient City

8/10 Good

"i stayed here for a visit with friends and was happy with it. the hotel is clean and comfortable with surprisingly large rooms. it's more of a group-tour hotel with lots of tour buses around - but good value for a comfortable room located near some of the major sights in Dali. The breakfast was very good. I'd recommend it for someone who wants affordable comfort while exploring Dali."

The Windyard Kazan Onsen Hotel-Private Hot Spring Bathtub close to South Gate of Dali Ancient Town

8/10 Good

"It was a good stay for us, the room was clean, staff very friendly, but if you are a non smoker, there's second hand smoke in the breakfast area or common areas, which is typical of most properties as the staff smoke. The breakfast is suited for Chinese travelers, so if you are accustomed to a western style breakfast, you won't find it here."

SIXI GOLDEN SUNRISE SOUND SLEEP HOTEL

8/10 Good

"The hotel was very clean and the gentleman working behind the front desk was very friendly and tried his very best to help with questions we had about traveling around Dali. The hotel is right in the middle of Dali Ancient City, so if that's what you want the location is excellent. It's a bit of a ride to the train station, but Didi's are very affordable. The hotel is very hard to find and the translation for the name of the hotel from English to Mandarin doesn't give the right name of the hotel. It took us awhile to find the hotel and even our DiDi driver from the airport didn't know the name of the hotel, somehow we found it. It's a small boutique hotel with clean rooms, comfortable bed, and breakfast made to order. Overall it was a good stay for the price."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Tianjing?

The best area to stay in Tianjing is the Old Town, particularly around Sifang Street and the surrounding lanes, as it offers the most authentic and convenient experience.

The Old Town is the heart of Tianjing, known for its well-preserved traditional architecture, cobblestone streets, and canals. Sifang Street is the central square, a bustling hub where you'll find local shops selling handicrafts, tea houses, and restaurants. The lanes branching off Sifang Street are quieter, offering guesthouses and boutique hotels located among residential homes. It's a very walkable area, allowing you to explore the town's unique character on foot.

Couples often find the Old Town ideal for a romantic and culturally rich getaway. The evening lantern-lit streets create a lovely setting for strolls, and many guesthouses offer rooms with balconies overlooking the canals, providing a peaceful retreat after a day of exploring. There are numerous intimate restaurants serving local Yunnan cuisine, great for a relaxed dinner.

For solo travellers, the Old Town provides a great base for exploration and connection. The central location means easy access to local markets and cultural performances. Many guesthouses are small and personal, making it easy to meet other travellers or engage with local hosts.

When is the best time to go to Tianjing?

The best times to visit Tianjing are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) months.

These periods offer the most pleasant weather for exploring, with comfortable temperatures and less rainfall compared to the summer monsoon season. Spring brings blooming flowers and lush landscapes, while autumn provides clear skies and colourful foliage, making outdoor activities particularly enjoyable.

For travellers who appreciate good weather for sightseeing and outdoor excursions, spring and autumn are ideal. You'll find it easier to enjoy activities like hiking in the nearby mountains, visiting tea plantations, or exploring the ancient town without the discomfort of extreme heat or heavy rain.

While summer (June to August) can be hot and humid with frequent rain showers, it's also when the tea harvests are in full swing, offering a different cultural experience.
