It took us two trips around the one-way system to find the place. The name of the place had changed to the Victoria Inn and was under new management. We had not received any notification of this. The pub downstairs looked absolutely fine, but we didn’t use it. We were taken upstairs to our room and it was obvious the place was being renovated as there were paint pots and dust sheets and decorating equipment in a corner in the hallway and wet paint signs everywhere. Our room was quite small. We couldn’t open the window. Room decor poor, outdated patched up woodchip & artex. Bathroom floor had hair stuck in the grime. All corners & shower ledges were dirty. Room had a strange smell. The Castlegate Arms hotel doesn’t exist anymore and I wasn’t aware of it. I tried to check in and the sign was being changed and the doors were locked. The workers changing the sign tried to contact the owner, but weren’t able to contact him. I went to another hotel down the road and the front desk tried to contact the owner, but couldn’t get ahold of him either. I couldn’t check in. The hotel is under new ownership and its owner is very friendly and helpful.
