![Located on the northeast coast of São Miguel, Farol do Arnel was the first lighthouse to be built in the Azores, and began operation on 26 November 1876.  

It’s still a working lighthouse today, 141 years later, and is open for guided tours every Wednesday afternoon.  As luck would have it, we were there on a Wednesday afternoon, but we only discovered this fact when the lighthouse keeper saw us poking around and invited us inside.

A word of warning though: if you plan to visit Farol do Arnel, park your car at the top and walk down – unless you’re a very competent driver or have an addiction to adrenaline and danger.

« My wife and I are easy and didn’t mind the lack of A/C but you cannot leave the windows open because of the bright lights, loud traffic, and moist air. Even when we did leave the windows open there is not much wind to speak of in Furnas so it didn’t help. Had there been at least a floor fan to provide some circulation of air it would have made for a much better sleep and stay. Otherwise the place was as described, clean, close to everything and the host was available. »

"Nous avons passé 5 nuits dans cet établissement. Le personnel a été très accueillant et agréable tout au long de notre séjour. La chambre était impeccable et très confortable. Le buffet du petit déjeuner était délicieux avec une grande variété d'options. Nous avons également apprécié la carte du restaurant ainsi que celle du bar. Nous avons passé un agréable séjour et remercions tout le personnel d’accueil, de restauration, d’entretien, et de maintenance. L'emplacement de l'hôtel permet de découvrir facilement l’île."
