Building Nr. 34, Zlín, Czech republic 

Tomáš Baťa was born 140 years ago and after WWI he succesfully founded a shoe making business and he became the biggest shoe manufacturer and shoe retail seller in the world before WWII with some 35 thousand employees worldwide. 

In Czech republic he actually reformatted the town of Zlín in South Moravia. In 1926 Baťa invited many architects (eg. Le Corbusier) and built a whole new aglomeration in Functionalism style. Not only the manufacturing halls, but also offices, shopping mall, hospital, cinema hall, hotel and houses for his employees.
 
Most of the new architecture was built before WWII, but some buildings added later actually respected the original vision seamlessly. One of them is the 10-storeyed central shoe storehouse, called Building Nr. 34 built in 1949-55 after the shoe factories were nationalized. With roughly 45 thousand square meters of space it is a real collossus. Ground floor was used for train transport, second for trucks. There was an oval rail on each storey and vertical movement was handled by elevators. On each side of the building there were outside fire escape stairs.
