![Part #7: Outer Fence
The outer fences were constructed in a number of phases, starting with the initial fortification of the border from May 1952.
This Photo is showing a "third-generation" fence, much more solidly constructed (1960s to the 1980s). The fence line was moved back to create an outer strip between the fence and the actual border. The barbed-wire fences were replaced with a barrier that was usually 3.2–4.0 metres (10–13 ft) high, like this.
The openings in the mesh were generally too small to provide finger-holds and were very sharp. The panels could not easily be pulled down, as they overlapped, and they could not be cut through with a bolt- or wire-cutter. « A thoroughly delightful hotel a few hundred yards from the Railway Station. Splendidly decorated with much elegance and the well-presented breakfast is excellent. I could see nothing to criticise except, perhaps, two details linked to my age. At 78, an ankle level safe is not very practical and a grab-rail would make it easier to get out of a shower some 20cm off the floor and with an exit on the corner. But I managed. heartily recommended. »

« Schickes Hotel mitten in der Innenstadt und noch einigermaßen fußläufig vom Bahnhof entfernt (ein nicht zu unterschätzender Vorteil, wenn man nach 18h30 mit dem Zug ankommt). Sehr nettes Personal, vor allem im hoteleigenen Restaurant. Komfortables und sauberes Zimmer mit Blick über die Dächer auf den Kirchturm, der allerdings ab 6 Uhr alle Viertelstunde die Zeit ansagt (man kann das eher Klingeln als lautes Glockengeläut nennen). Mein Dachzimmer kühlte nachts relativ schnell aus, wogegen die...

The outer fences were constructed in a number of phases, starting with the initial fortification of the border from May 1952.
This Photo is showing a "third-generation" fence, much more solidly constructed (1960s to the 1980s). The fence line was moved back to create an outer strip between the fence and the actual border. The barbed-wire fences were replaced with a barrier that was usually 3.2–4.0 metres (10–13 ft) high, like this.
The openings in the mesh were generally too small to provide finger-holds and were very sharp. The panels could not easily be pulled down, as they overlapped, and they could not be cut through with a bolt- or wire-cutter.
