Quiet remote location with beach access, facilities have potential for a renovation
The cleanliness could definitely be improved, as there was a lot of dust and no body soap or shampoo provided. The rain made it difficult to drive to the cabin. However, the staff were kind.
What a gem of a hostel! Our private room had a beautiful balcony that overlook the forest and the beach. It was very clean and cozy, and the bed was really comfortable! Would definitely stay again!
I stayed 1 night here with family and really enjoyed it. We arrrived just at sun set and the owner met us. We went straight to the beach from the property via a forest track where you can watch the sunset. We had a large self catering cottage to ourselves and our room was ensuite. Very pleasant stay and really quiet location. I would definitely recommend it and I would stay again.

Cabin in the woods
Nice little cabin in the woods with everything you could need. The locals parked a little too far into the road so the rental had to visit the undergrowth a bit to get past.

Room was adequate, sparse but had what we needed for 1 night. Internet was spotty at best and unavailable for much of our stay. The visiting Wētā birds on the deck made up for it!

The rooms were basic and clean. Water pressure was minimal. Given it’s nowhere near any town, not unexpected. The walk to the beach was good and surroundings were amazing.

Very Pretty Area close to the beach
The hut or home is old but situated in a beautiful area. The single room I used is not suitable for tall person as the ceiling is very low (it’s an attic room) easily bump head to the padded wooden beams.
Difficult to drive in and out of reception then difficult to get out of our unit parking. Older run down ensuite unit. Full cooking facilities but dishes dirty. Nice ocean view
We appreciated the manager letting us shift our separate rooms to one two bedroom cottage at the last minute. As the heavy rains came during the night, we were beyond grateful that we were not in a tent or in a small metal "economy room" with no bathroom! We were safe and sound in a lovely two bedroom cottage with a well equipped kitchenette, large living room, covered deck and a walking path to the ocean (before the rain came). We were only there one night, checked in late and left early, but our time there was greatly appreciated.
A lovely stay at Te Nikau Retreat in Punakaiki. It’s basic but exactly what we needed and pretty good for the price. We stayed in Koru which is just a bed but that’s what we were expecting so it was great for us. Very close to the toilets. Good kitchen facilities. Shower pressure isn’t brilliant but it’s fine for one or two nights. Great location - just a few mins away from the Punakaiki rocks and only a short walk down to the beach for sunset which was recommended to us by the owner. He even gave us some insect repellent too. Only minor - but maybe try to put the lights near the signs in the walkway down to the beach as we did get a little lost on the way back to the hostel in the dark.
Tropical feel. We had so much room and the kitchen was sufficiently equiped. However, here are my suggestions: Screens so we can get fresh air with no mosquito attacks, Linnens are alway more inviting when crips white, the kitchen counter was a beautiful wood slab but it retains the odor of food. Remove extra kitchen cups and unnecessary utensils for less clutter.

It's a great spot, and easy walking to a fantastic beach. The kitchen and bathroom facilities were about average for a backpackers. The room itself was below average though. The door was closed with a bolt, but there was a gap all around it. There was a latch and a padlock for when we wanted to go out, and there was a strong musty/mouldy smell in the room. The bed was surprisingly comfortable though.
