  • Claflin University, located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, was founded in 1869 by Alonzo Webster (1818-1887), a Vermont minister. Webster came to South Carolina to teach at the Baker Bible Institute in Charleston training African American ministers for the Methodist Episcopal Church (today the United Methodist Church). In 1869 he received a charter from the state of South Carolina to establish a college that would prepare freed slaves for the responsibilities of citizenship. The first charter banned discrimination among the faculty, staff and students, making the Academy the first South Carolina university open to all regardless of race. Nonetheless, all of the students at the Academy were African American.

This house was so unsanitary. We walked in while grabbing a few items from the car. It smelt like someone peed all over the house and the windows were not opened for months. Our toddler started to cough uncontrollably so we left. Lynn was very nice about everything and refunded us our money.

Quiet & comfortable.Conveniently located off of I-26, yet far enough away as to be secluded.The covered parking area was wonderful since we arrived in the rain.This was our second stay at the cottage, and will be our regular stop-over in the future.Mr. Bowen is a most gracious host.Would highly recommend this for short stays.

Lovely stay

The home was very clean and comfortable. The location is fairly remote (which we enjoyed) but easy to get to "town" within 10-20 minutes depending on where you need to go. Hostess was great. Met her father as well, also nice and polite. The layout of the home is nice. Very well stocked! The best of any other rental we've stayed in. Candy and water upon entry was a very nice treat. Beds were so comfortable. Would absolutely stay here again. Thank you Terri Lynn for opening your lovely home.

Peaceful getaway from winter

Fairly remote, but easy to get to the important places you might want to go to.The owners have opened up a second house on the property that is larger than the one we rented that should accommodate more occupants if needed.Top notch hosts.

We have stayed here before. And will definitely stay again. It's nice to have a place that reminds you of home when away from home. A nice, clean, safe and quiet place to lay your head. I highly recommend staying here.

Cute cottage

The place is pretty spacious with lots of room in the master bedroom for your clothes (There was just the two of us). The bed was soft and comfortable. We didn’t use the kitchen other than for toast and coffee. The coffee was complimentary. The location is remote and quiet. We didn’t need to talk to the owners which is good. We would and probably will stay again.

Cozy, peaceful cottage

This cottage was perfect. It's very clean and comfortable. The host have provided lots of extras that aren't normally supplied at a rental. My father lives in Bowman, so to find this little gem just down the road from him was perfect. I stayed with my husband and granddaughter and she was very happy to find the coloring books and bin of toys. The host Terry was very kind and even gave us a tour of the property. It's very beautiful. We will definitely stay here from now on when we come to visit family.
