What you can expect

The church has opened its doors to visitors of Mombasa city to visit this remarkable historical landmark that has a religious significance. At the meeting point, you will be greeted by your guide who is a parishioner/caretaker of the church to guide you through the church history and its memorable history. The guide will give you a detailed explanation of the cathedral including how it was established.

About the establishment of the Church: The Congregation of the Holy Spirit under the protection of the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary [Latin: Congregatio Sancti Spiritus sub tutela Immaculati Cordis Beatissimae Virginis Mariae] – simply: “Congregation of the Holy Spirit”, otherwise known as the Holy Ghost Fathers or Spiritans – a clerical religious congregation of pontifical right for men that was founded in Paris, France on 27 May 1703 (Pentecost Sunday) with the motto: “One heart and one spirit” [Latin: Cor unum et anima una] by Claude-François Poullart des Places, CSSp. was the first Roman Catholic missionary group to arrive and evangelize in Mombasa, Kenya, having initially settled in Zanzibar on 16 June 1863 before crossing over to Bagamoyo in Tanzania Mainland on 2 February 1868; primarily focusing on receiving and teaching slaves freed by the British marines from the Arab slave traders during the 19th century.

About the construction of the Holy Ghost Church (the present Cathedral): During the early 20th century (the 1900s), it became apparent that the capacity was inadequate for the growing congregation. The little Church needed replacement with a larger structure, capturing the attention of the then Vicar Apostolic of Zanzibar, Monsignor John Gerald Neville, CSSp., an Irish by birth, during his inaugural episcopal visit to Mombasa on 14 Mar 1914 – having been appointed to the post on 1 Sep 1913. Br. Walter Gustav, highly proficient in the building and construction trade, drew up the requisite plan that the bishop found excellent and pledged to help congregants mobilise the necessary funds to actualize the dream.
