Settled as a town in 1650, St. George’s Caye was the largest settlement in 17th- and 18th-century British Honduras. From Sept. 3-10, 1798, British settlers fought and defeated a small Spanish fleet sent to drive them from the area. A national holiday to commemorate this event is marked every September. Today, only 20 people live on the island.
