Having lived in Western Canada all my life, I can say with all certainty that it is a remarkable part of the country. For those that haven’t been, or perhaps haven’t toured many areas (and especially in the winter), these are the top 8 wonderful winter destinations in western Canada.

Banff National Park

Wrap yourself  in great winter activities at this destination. You’ll find everything from skiing and an Ice Walk to horse drawn sleigh rides. The Banff area is a personal favourite of mine, from strolling the shops in the town of Banff to taking the gondola up Sulphur Mountain – there is plenty to see and do.

Natural Ice Rink at Lake Louise

Take advantage of the frozen waters and go ice skating outdoors on Lake Louise. You will be in awe of the breathtaking scenery of the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains. As well, the skating is FREE!

Jasper Park Lodge

The Jasper Lodge is nestled inside of the Jasper National Park. It is a year-round luxury resort where you can enjoy everything from skiing and ice skating to the ultimate spa treatment.

Downtown Kelowna

Visit with Santa, have a bite to eat and get your Christmas shopping done amongst all of the festivities in Downtown Kelowna. This destination is a great weekend getaway during the winter, for those seeking milder temperatures.

Radium Hot Springs

Take a drive outside of Alberta and visit Radium Hot Springs in Kootenay National Park, British Columbia. You will be able to warm your body and soul in the hot spring mineral pools.

Whistler

This resort town is a great place to visit for all snow bunny families. You will find skiing, snowboarding and even a tube park. If you need a break from skiing, check out Magic Castle and Tree Fort.

Canada Olympic Park

Besides skiing, snowboarding and ice skating, Canada Olympic Park offers the opportunity to go on a bobsled run! Jump on the bobsled and take a spin down the track. This is just one activity to do in Calgary, yet one that you will always remember.

Attend a Winter Festival

Winter festivals are my absolute favourite event to intertwine with my winter vacation. Book a hotel that is close to the event location for a long weekend away with the family. Enjoy ice sculpting, Christmas lights, hot chocolate and sledding. Here are just a few that are taking place during the 2014-2015 Winter season.

– Ice on Whyte, Edmonton (Jan 23 – Feb 1)
– Winter CARnival at Heritage Park in Calgary (Dec 27 – Jan 4)
– Ice Magic at Lake Louise (Jan 16 – Jan 25)
– Silver Skate Festival in Edmonton (Feb 13 – Feb 22)
– Snow Days in Banff (Jan 10 – Feb 8)

Don’t let the winter weather stop you from exploring this wonderful country, soaking in the mineral hot springs or skiing down the mountain slopes.

I wish I could spend all winter taking in all of these gorgeous sights, cities, and events – share your favourite western Canadian winter destination!
