About Las Vegas

The earliest traces of civilization are found in the valley in the form petro glyphs and ancient drawings. The valley is understood to have been inhabited by native Indians from 2000 BC to 1800 AD. The Anasazi tribe resided in what is known today as the mainland Vegas city while Paiute tribe inhibited the outer valley regions.

The first non-native American to discover the city was Rafael Rivera in 1829. 1844 saw the arrival of J. Fremont, whose writings helped pioneers reach the region. The Fremont Street in downtown Vegas city is named after him. The city was founded in 1905 and incorporated in 1911. When founded, Las Vegas City held the honor of being the most populous city of the 20th century, second only to Chicago.

Location

As per the available Las Vegas map, the city is located within the Nevada County region, the seat of Clark County region, incorporating the Las Vegas Valley as part of the metropolitan area. The city of Las Vegas is situated inside the Basin of Clark County and Mojave Desert floor while the city is surrounded by mountainous ranges from all corners.

Most of the mountains in the surroundings reach 3000 meters (10000+ feet) in height, forming a natural cover for the city from moisture inflows from surrounding areas. Las Vegas has an elevation of approximately 2050 feet above sea level (ASL). The total calculated urban land territory is 136 sq mi (square miles) or 352 sq km (square kilometers) while the water area is calculated as between 0.05 sq mi (0.13 sq km).

Weather

Las Vegas weather is a mix of subtropical and hot desert climate. The sun shines for the best part of the year, keeping the weather pleasant and warm. As the Mojave Desert lies at one end, the weather is subtly warm for the most part. In fact, compared to other counties in the Nevada state, the city has 310 sunny days a year.

The summers are dry and hot, with temperatures soaring as high as 95o F during the daytime, and 80o F at night. Throughout the year, the average is 135 warm days with 90+ temperatures in day and 80+ at night. Summers are long and warm, while winter is short and pleasant.
