Expedia.ca Romance Review

Love and travel often go hand in hand. With Valentine’s Day falling over a long weekend for many provinces across Canada, (including Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) upcoming getaways for the romantically set are likely top of mind.

In order to spotlight the connection between travel and romance, we asked* Canadians, both those solo and in a relationship, how soon was too soon to take an overnight trip with a new fling, how important it was to have a significant other that was passionate about travelling, where they would most want to travel to within our borders and their thoughts on the best romantic vacation a partner could plan.

Here are the key findings from the 2016 Expedia.ca Romance Review:

Run away with me…

  • Nearly half of Canadians surveyed (48.4%) feel it is important to have a partner that is passionate about travelling
  • Those 65+ years old (54.8%) were the most likely to feel it was important to have a partner that is passionate about travelling

How soon is too soon?

  • Almost 30 per cent (28.3%) of Canadians surveyed would consider taking an overnight trip with a significant other after 1-3 months of dating
  • Interestingly, those 18-34 would prefer to wait 4-8 months before taking an overnight trip with a significant other

Where the romance is:

  • Banff and Jasper, Alberta topped the list of destinations that Canadians would most want to travel to for a romantic getaway as a couple (31.9%)
    • Couples could consider staying a hotel like The Fairmont Banff Springs, located in the heart of Banff National Park. Fairmont Banff Springs is luxury mountain resort that offers unparalleled skiing in the winter and an award winning spa, the perfect combination for a couple looking to have fun and relax.
  • Vancouver, British Columbia was the most popular travel destination that Canadians aged 18-24 would most want to travel to for a romantic getaway as a couple (31.9%)
    • Younger couples might consider staying at the Pinnacle Hotel Vancouver Harbourfront, located just steps from downtown Vancouver, along with stunning views and first-class cuisine. With perks like onsite fitness training, complimentary bicycle use and hotel car, the experience is one not to miss.
  • For singletons, Montreal, Quebec topped the list of romantic destinations that they would most want to travel to (21.5%)
    • Ladies on visiting Montreal for a “Galentines Day” getaway, could have a girl’s only weekend at the Hotel Omni Mont-Royal. Located in downtown Montreal near McGill University the hospitality experience is enhanced by luxurious and comforting loft style guestrooms. The hotel is in the perfect proximity to the best dining, shopping and nightlife Montreal has to offer.

The results for the best romantic vacation are in:

  • A trip by plane to a tropical destination was considered the most romantic vacation a partner could plan for almost one third of respondents (31.2%)
    • Some ideas to inspire tropical travel can be found here, here and here
  • A road trip weekend getaway was also a top pick, with over one quarter of respondents (25.7%) selecting this option as the most romantic vacation a partner could plan. This was especially true of Canadians surveyed aged 18-34 and for Canadians earning less than $24,000

With all of the opportunities for love and travel this Valentine’s Day, there’s no excuse not to take a trip with someone you care about!
