The General Güemes Gallery, also known as Pasaje Güemes, located at Florida 165, Buenos Aires, and inaugurated in 1915, is a late art nouveau style building that has an interior pedestrian passage that joins Florida and San Martin streets.

It was the first building in Buenos Aires built entirely of reinforced concrete and is also considered the first skyscraper in the city. Since its opening, it has housed in its basement a theatre and a tea room frequented by high society, as well as the famous confectionery on the 14th floor.

In the theatre that worked in the basement, Carlos Gardel performed on February 27, 1917, and shortly after it became the famous cabaret and dance “Abdullah Club”.

In the adjoining room called then “Verona” high society would meet at tea time and on its balcony an Orchestra of Young Ladies or a Vitrolera would liven up the afternoon, and at some point some couples would also cheer up and dance some tangos waiting for them to come out. made the night

A large part of the history of tango was gestated in the basement of the Güemes Gallery since the beginning of the century.

That magical historical environment was transformed into Palacio Tango, an art and entertainment centre that houses two theatres dedicated to the two most important icons in a single space: Carlos Gardel and Astor Piazzolla.

The show was titled Tango Carlos Gardel in homage to the undisputed icon of Tango, it covers the entire history of tango in 60 magical minutes and recalls the criollo thrush with his best works.

An artistic display of the highest level and a production at the height of the character to which it pays homage, recreates his most important songs, as well as that of the greatest composers of the golden age of tango.

Dedicated exclusively to the revolutionary innovator of the genre, the show developed in his honour covers part of his immense work, from its beginnings, going through the time of his typical orchestra and ending in the avant-garde movement that made him one of the musical geniuses of this century.
