Small-Group Yucatan Home Cooking Tour

by Urban Adventures Duration 5h 30m Free cancellation available No booking or credit card fees
per adult Price is C$73

Celebrate the rich culinary traditions of the Yucatan. This food tour traverses the bustling markets of Merida as you sample ingredients completely new to your taste buds. Learn market customs and cooking techniques before heading to a local’s home to cook up a tasty masterpiece.

Meet your expert guide and head to a relatively unknown local market, for a truly authentic shopping experience. Here, busy streets are lined with colourful stalls offering fresh fruits, oval-shaped mamey, tiny cherry-like nance and bright pink, cactus-looking pitahaya. While you weave around stacks of aromatic herbs and spices, learn about Mexican market customs and culture.

After you’ve collected all necessary ingredients, continue to the home of a host family, and pick up a few Spanish and Mayan phrases, while you prepare some Yucatan favourites. After you fry tortillas, and slow-cook your meats, have a seat over classic dishes such as salbutes – fried tortillas topped with chicken, avocado and jalapeno – and codzitos, delicious meat wrapped in a deep-fried tortilla.

Finish your meal with a refreshing glass of horchata – a sweet rice milk flavoured with cinnamon – or hibiscus flower tea before concluding your experience, and heading out into the city.

His is a must-do actuvity! Gustavo is an excellent guide and being with the locals, preparing a meal, was one of the best experiences we have had.

This was a great way to start our holiday in Merida. We started with a very detailed tour of the local food market from our guide Alejo, who was happy to answer any questions we had about anything from the ingredients we were buying and how to find them back in London, to life in Merida and the history of the region. We then took a bus journey to the house where we were to cook the meal. We did most of the cooking ourselves, with Alejo helping as we were a small group, and our lovely host Bertha clearing up behind us and providing drinks. We made 5 or 6 different dishes, and the food was absolutely delicious. We would definitely recommend this experience
