What you can expect
Visit the picturesque town of Pylos on a small group day trip from Kalamata. See the castle of Niokastro and discover one of the most impressive castles in Peloponnese at Methoni.
Depart Kalamata and travel through streets filled with olive and orange trees. Head through a landscape full of myths and traditions on the 1-hour journey to Pylos. See the castle and Bay of Navarino and marvel at how it contrasts with the green of Pylos.
Get a panoramic view of both the small and larger islands out at sea, along with the huge rocks in front and parts of the island of Sfaktiria. Admire the ruins of a fortification wall built by the Spartans in 425 BC during the Peloponnesian War. Continue to the picturesque town of Pylos and enjoy a coffee in the main square. Learn the history of the town and its monuments, including the monument to the 3 admirals from Russia, France and England on Three Admirals’ Square.
Visit the castle of Niokastro before you leave Pylos. Built by the Turks in 1573 AD, like every other castle in the region it has constantly changed hands. Stroll the cobblestone streets of the area, and admire the 4 cylindrical towers and aqueduct from the days of Venetian rule.
Next, go to the nearby town of Methoni to see one of the most impressive castles of the Peloponnese, including the small islet with its fortified octagonal tower known as the “Bourtzi.” Stroll between the walls and battlements of the castle, and learn how Venetian soldiers started to build it in 1500 AD. End at a tavern under the walls of Methoni and satisfy your hunger overlooking the Bourtzi.
