The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı in Turkish) is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, located in Istanbul, Turkey. Here are the key details: History • Construction began in the mid-15th century, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. • It was originally commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II (Mehmed the Conqueror). • Over centuries, it expanded into a massive commercial hub. Layout & Scale • The bazaar spans 61 covered streets and has over 4,000 shops. • It covers around 30,700 square metres (7.5 acres). • It’s often described as a “city within a city,” with mosques, fountains, hammams (Turkish baths), and even a police station.
