Description

The Hoover Dam is a short drive from the fast-paced Vegas Strip, and this tour allows you to venture into the beautiful Mojave Desert and uncover the rich history and planning behind the Hoover Dam. Built in 1935, the massive concrete dam was once the world's largest power-producing facility and now remains a world-renowned feat of engineering.

Hop on board a comfortable air-conditioned bus for a scenic drive through the cactus-lined desert, checking out the flora and fauna of this arid landscape as you make your way towards Hoover Dam. Towering 725 feet (220 m) above the Colorado River, the dam is one of the largest concrete structures on the planet.

Head inside the Hoover Dam and take the Power Plant Tour to marvel at the 17 turbine generators at work and learn how they transform flowing water into enough electricity to power a major portion of the American Southwest. Walk through the facility and listen to your guide describe historic details of the structure's controversies, tragedies and first-of-its-kind technology.

Next, step out for a view of the Arizona Spillway, which funnels water from Lake Mead deep into the canyon walls, through a chute wide enough to fit a WWII battleship. From atop a lookout that also happens to be the perfect viewpoint, enjoy panoramic vistas of Lake Mead and its vivid desert backdrop.

This excursion from the hotel was $100 per person, we booked through Expedia and the tour was great. We were picked up on time from our hotel and our bus driver was very knowledgeable and went the extra mile. The tour of the dam was very interesting and the dam itself is an awesome monument to what man can accomplish and the history behind the dam is interesting too.

So at first our sweettour guide said that the powerplant tour was not available because the elevators were down and gave us back $5 ea. In exchange they took us to extra view points. Then when we got to the visitor centre he said there was an upgrade tour for $5 but he wasn't sure what it was but we could ask inside. Well it was an upgrade for the powerplant. Elevators were working when we got there so we got the whole tour and then some!!!. Beware though, due to 9-11 and other threats the power plant tout is limited but you do get to see the turbines, but from the upper walkway.
