What you can expect
Tour Cartago – Costa Rica’s first capital – and then head up to the Irazú Volcano to see the main craters and the beautiful Caribbean and Pacific coasts in the distance. Along the way to Irazú, relax and enjoy the views as the road winds through fertile crop land.
Starting out from your San José hotel, tour the beautiful city of Cartago, home to the 1921 Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, which houses a small shrine where the faithful go to worship Costa Rica’s patron saint. A mixture of Roman, Arabic and Gothic styles, the basilica has 32 stained-glass windows depicting the Virgin, the Heart of Jesus and the 15 Stations of the Cross.
Then, hop into your tour van to head to the volcano. Drive through beautiful pastoral land on the way to discover the Irazú Volcano, with terrain so scarred that it bears an uncanny resemblance to the surface of the moon. Listen as your guide tells you all about the Irazú Volcano National Park, which protects the colossal volcano. At 11,260 feet (3,432 m) above sea level, Irazú is the tallest volcano in Costa Rica and is still active, with a long history of eruptions and eruptive cycles.
The protected area’s many geological features include the Playa Hermosa, the Crater Principal lake and Diego de la Haya crater, as well as the Sapper Formation – the highest point of the mountain – from which both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts may be seen. After viewing the volcano's impressive sights, enjoy a relaxing journey back to your San José hotel.
