What you can expect
Stroll through the magnificent ruins of Ayutthaya and witness the remnants of historic temples and palaces that line the shores of the Chao Phraya River. Climb on board a comfortable vessel to cruise down the river back to Bangkok, and enjoy the sights while you feast on a traditional Thai buffet.
Leave Bangkok and make your way to the ancient city of Ayutthaya on board a comfortable coach. Once you arrive, follow your guide to the Ayutthaya Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the weather-worn ruins of pointed prang (reliquary towers) and gigantic monasteries offer an idea of the city's past glory. Visit the Wat Maha Tat, an expansive Buddhist temple compound that includes the relics of old religious buildings, numerous headless Buddha statues, and the remains of royal villas. Be sure to check out the enormous Buddha head that is surrounded by the gnarled roots of living tree.
Next, swing by the 17th-century Bang Pa-In Royal Palace, whose 19th-century restoration helped maintain its colourful roof tiles and intricate stupa. Witness glittering gold-and-green temples, ornate buildings with columned porticos, and romantic marble statues of graceful female figures.
Proceed to the river's edge to set off on a cruise down the Chao Phraya River that takes you back to Bangkok while you pile your plate high with traditional Thai cuisine. Savour the rich and spicy flavours of local delicacies as you float downstream, taking in the outstanding views of the lush green countryside before the trees start to slowly thin out and the buildings of the capital begin to take their place.
