Embark on a full-day adventure to the crater of Ilamatepec—also known as Santa Ana—an active volcano containing a beautiful turquoise pool in its centre. Hike a narrow trail up the volcanic summit, stopping at a number of viewpoints to admire the surrounding countryside and the Pacific Ocean in the distance.

Get picked up from our meetinf points in San Salvador, and drive to the Illamatepec Volcano, the highest volcano in El Salvador at 7,812 feet (2,381 m). Start on the trailhead and hike along a narrow mountain path, ascending in elevation to a number of marked viewpoints.

As you work your way closer to the crater, spy incredible views of Coatepeque Lake, Izalco Volcano, Cerro Verde, and the Pacific Ocean in the distance. At the crater's ridge, the elevation is high enough that hikers are often enveloped in clouds. Admire the turquoise pool in the centre of the volcanic crater before beginning your hike back down to the trailhead.
