Archaeological Tour of Akrotiri with Wine Tasting & Black Sand Beaches

Make your way to the southern end of Santorini to explore the island’s less-touristed attractions. Take in breathtaking panoramas from a hilltop monastery, roam the serene streets of a quiet village, and kick back on a black sand beach before a wine tasting and tour of an ancient archaeological site.

Your knowledgeable guide picks you up from your hotel and drives toward the breathtaking Prophet Elias Monastery, which sits perched at the highest point of the island, 1,804 feet (550 m) above the cobalt sea below. Take in the sweeping scenery and admire the whitewashed bell tower before continuing on.

Head to the quiet village of Megalochori, where traditional buildings sit like sugar cubes among the sun-soaked vineyards. Follow your guide through narrow streets and bougainvillea-draped archways before winding down toward the coast and the black-sand beach of Perivolos. Spend a few hours at your leisure.

Afterward, stop in at one of the area’s fantastic wineries, where you can sample sweet vinsanto made from grapes dried in the sun and dry reds, whites, and rosés grown in the fertile volcanic soil of the hills that surround you.

Finally, arrive at Akrotiri, a fascinating ancient archaeological site. Explore the Minoan city’s well-preserved frescoes and works of art − the Bronze Age settlement was buried in ash in the 17th century BC − with an expert guide, before the scenic drive back across the island to your hotel.

The day we took this tour we were fortunate enough to be in a small group of just 9 travelers, so it really felt like a semi private tour. Dimitrius was a great guide, friendly and knowledgeable, and all the places we visited were just amazing, especially the Akrotori excavation site which we just loved. (Eugenia was our Akrotori site guide and was great too!) A really great day at a very minimal cost -- I highly recommend!

Really enjoyable way to spend a day! The visit to the monastery was particularly lovely and the end-of-the-day wine tasting was a great way to finish. In between, you get to visit some local villages and the red and black beaches in addition to the wonder of the ancient city of Akrotiri, which is thought provoking and awe inspiring - I loved it!

Dimitrios was an excellent guide! We enjoyed all the stops and especially the unique doors in one of the villages.
