Description

Immerse yourself in San Francisco's Aquarium of the Bay as you encounter local marine creatures that live in the waters off the California coast. The facility is home to over 20,000 aquatic animals and features four main exhibit areas.

Begin in the Discover the Bay exhibit where you can watch for elusive moray eels, a spotted horn shark and colourful Garibaldi, the state fish of California.

Next, walk under deep water at the Under the Bay exhibit, going through 300 feet (91 metre) of aquatic tunnels for a unique look at life under San Francisco Bay. 700,000 gallons (2,650 l) of real Bay water fill these tanks. Check out a giant Pacific octopus, roaming sevengill sharks and teeming schools of anchovies flitting over your head. Peer into the illuminated moon jam fish display. These mesmerising creatures dance through the water as colourful lights transform the scene.

At the Touch the Bay exhibit, reach into two tide pools filled with sea anemones, sea stars, bat rays and a small shark. While you're there catch some of the Bay Lab animal encounters and programmes.

Finally, visit the Watershed Ambassadorexhibit and enjoy the amusing antics of four North American river otters. Learn about these adorable animals while watching them romp, swim, play and eat. This gallery highlights conservation of the rivers and other watersheds that flow into the Bay.

During your visit, learn about ongoing conservation efforts from Educators throughout the Aquarium. This is a nonprofit educational and conservation facility.

While the aquarium was not large, our children were fascinated with the variety of sea life available and the interactivity. They especially enjoyed touching the stingrays and observing the feeding of the river otters. Walking through the large glass sections provided a wonderful full view of a large variety of ocean creatures. Very pleasant afternoon!
