Description

Immerse yourself in the vibrant history of the Philadelphia region's waterways with admission to the Independence Seaport Museum. Explore the interactive exhibits at this this site that houses more than 25,000 maritime artefacts, 2 National Historic Landmark ships, and a traditional boat shop.

Set out early to make the most of your day at the Independence Seaport Museum, devoted to preserving the maritime history of the Greater Delaware Valley. Begin at Pirates & Patriots, an exhibit that tells the story of the United States Navy. Climb on board the Schooner Diligence and learn about the vital role this craft played in defending American merchant ships against attacks from Britain and France during the 18th century.

Then, check out Tides of Freedom, a fascinating display that reveals themes of slavery, emancipation, reconstruction, and the Civil Rights era along the Delaware River. From this trove, head to the Cruiser Olympia warship, a 344-foot (105-metre) treasure of the US Navy. Climb on board the ship and learn about her past as the world's oldest surviving steel warship and the sole surviving naval ship of the Spanish-American War.

Finally, cap off your experience with a stroll through the museum's boat-building shop. Watch as skilled technicians demonstrate methods that have been used to craft wooden vessels for centuries. Marvel at boats being outfitted to sail the Delaware River as well as the New Jersey shore.
