According to a recent poll by Expedia.ca, one-third of all Canadians prefer to stay downtown when on vacation. But not all downtowns are created equal. We searched high and low for innovative art scenes, top walk scores, and that little je ne sais quoi <\/em>that makes a city unforgettable. We\u2019ve narrowed it down to 10 of Canada\u2019s coolest downtown areas, from up-and-comers to perennial favourites. Put these on your list, downtown lovers.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Downtown St. Thomas, ON<\/a><\/h3>\n

Picture this: art crawls, craft beer, and international cuisine. We bet you\u2019re not thinking about St. Thomas, Ontario, but you should be. The Railway City Arts Crawl<\/strong>, which takes place February 23 and 24 in 2018, has local art, music, and beer. And speaking of beer, you can\u2019t miss the Honey Elixir brown ale at Railway City Brewing Co<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Taste of the town<\/em>: Rail City Bistro<\/strong> features a different international locale each weekend, from India to Hungary to\u2026Tex-Mex? All we know is, it\u2019s good.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love the nightlife<\/em>: The Back Alley<\/strong> just wants you to dance, and judging by its live music events, DJ nights, and karaoke, it\u2019s succeeding.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Downtown Toronto, ON<\/a><\/h3>\n

There\u2019s no argument: Downtown Toronto is hip, and Kensington Market wins the prize for the coolest of the cool downtown neighbourhoods. If \u201cros\u00e9 all day\u201d is your motto, a laid-back brunch at vegetarian Hibiscus Caf\u00e9<\/strong> is for you. And after a boozy brunch, it doesn\u2019t get much better than tipsy shopping, especially when you\u2019re at Bungalow<\/strong>, a vintage-lover\u2019s paradise of clothes and home goods.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Taste of the town<\/em>: What\u2019s the opposite of a vegetarian caf\u00e9? Try \u201cNational Bacon Headquarters,\u201d aka the brick-and-mortar location of food truck sensation Bacon Nation<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love the nightlife<\/em>: Sneaky Dee\u2019s<\/strong> hipster cred is through the roof. If you\u2019re looking for a good party, this music venue has you covered any night of the week.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Downtown Moose Jaw, SK<\/h3>\n

You might know Moose Jaw as the home of the world\u2019s second<\/em> largest moose\u2014or you might not know it at all. Moose Jaw is outdoorsy (Crescent Park is the \u201cJewel of the Prairies\u201d), artistic (there are more than 40 murals throughout downtown), and easy to get around (the trolley is downright delightful). What else do you want from a charming, small downtown? If the answer is friendly locals, it\u2019s got that too.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Taste of the town<\/em>: Grab a pint at Browns Socialhouse<\/strong> and meet your new best friends.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love the nightlife<\/em>: Cask 82<\/strong> is the new kid on the block, but its wine specials, live music, and 1am closing time made it the neighbourhood hot spot right away.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Downtown Winnipeg, MB<\/a><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s no mistake Winnipeg is home to multiple Olympic speed skaters\u2014in winter, its frozen rivers make up the longest natural skating path in the world. It\u2019s also got the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the first national museum to be built outside the National Capital Region. A city centre with that kind of record certainly deserves to be called one of the best downtowns in Canada.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Taste of the town<\/em>: Winnipeg\u2019s food truck scene is booming, and while the season may be over, you can still get your street food on at Merchant Kitchen<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love the nightlife<\/em>: Pyramid Cabaret<\/strong> is like the Kinder Surprise of entertainment: you never know what you\u2019re gonna get. Just go there. Trust us.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Downtown Brandon, MB<\/a><\/h3>\n

Recent revitalization projects have Brandon on the up-swing. Cute coffee shops and boutiques like Ten Thousand Villages <\/strong>and Abby Rose <\/strong>are moving into Rosser Ave., and there are loads of adorable winter activities. The Global Market<\/strong> turns into a Christmas market in November and December, and there\u2019s an outdoor ice skating rink across the street.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Taste of the town<\/em>: Komfort Kitchen<\/strong> serves up just what you\u2019d expect: huge portions of classic comfort food like steak and eggs.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love the nightlife<\/em>: With events like Margaritafest and Oktoberfest, plus delicious bar snacks, The Dock on Princess<\/strong> is the place to be on a Friday night.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Downtown Lunenburg, NS<\/a><\/h3>\n

\nThe sleepy fishing village of Lunenburg is quickly turning into an artists\u2019 haven\u2014and with such incredible scenery, there\u2019s no shortage of inspiration. Colourful Old Town Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lined with art galleries of all types. Our favourites: Peer Gallery <\/strong>is an artists\u2019 co-op featuring contemporary Nova Scotia talent; Power House Art<\/strong> has a large collection of Inuit art and sculpture.<\/span><\/p>\n

Taste of the town<\/em>: The \u201cartists\u201d at Ironworks Distillery<\/strong> make a different sort of masterpiece\u2014the kind that you can drink.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love the nightlife<\/em>: Grand Banker Bar & Grill<\/strong> features local talent from JUNO winners to blues legends. Order up a Dark & Stormy and get into the groove of the maritimes.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Downtown Longueuil, QC <\/a><\/h3>\n

Located just across the St. Lawrence River from Montreal, Longueuil\u2019s restaurants serve up a diverse flavour palette\u2014and with a walk score of 56, trying them all is as easy as stepping out your door. A stroll along rue Saint-Charles Ouest reveals Portuguese at Silva Grillades<\/strong>, Italian at Restaurant Messina<\/strong>, and Vietnamese-Thai fusion at Lanterne<\/strong>. With a home base in Longueuil, your taste buds will never be bored.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Qu\u00e9bec City\u2019s Saint-Roch neighbourhood is the Kendall Jenner of Canadian downtowns\u2014its facelift is barely noticeable, but it\u2019s certainly brought a lot of publicity. This trendy area is the city\u2019s \u201cnew downtown,\u201d and it is a star. Introduce yourself to its charms with a beverage at Noctem Artisans Brasseurs<\/strong> and a stroll through the boutiques of rue Saint-Joseph.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Taste of the town<\/em>: Gourmet sandwiches and coffee at La Bo\u00eete \u00e0 Pain<\/strong> perfectly capture the laid-back yet trendy atmosphere of Saint-Roch.<\/span><\/p>\n

We love the nightlife<\/em>: Art, music, culture\u2014is there anything Le Cercle<\/strong> doesn\u2019t do? Be there when this neighbourhood staple celebrates its 10th anniversary on November 11.<\/span><\/p>\n

9. Downtown Burnaby, BC <\/a><\/h3>\n

10. Downtown Vancouver, BC<\/a><\/h3>\n

When it comes to accolades, Vancouver\u2019s won them all: most liveable, most walkable, most eco-friendly. Spend a day touring downtown\u2019s quirky public art, from the Trans Am Totem to the Digital Orca, a leaping, pixellated whale.
