Ordering a beer abroad in the native tongue is satisfying; you get a delicious brew and can make a stronger connection with the bar staff and other locals.<\/p>\n

If you want to go that extra inch and show full respect to the kind barkeep who\u2019s serving you, it can be rewarding to both of you (and impress the barflies) to use the two or three local words required \u2013 and seal the deal with the appropriate \u2018Sk\u00e5l\u2019, \u2018Prost\u2019 or, well, \u2018Cheers\u2019 (which goes down well in most Anglophone countries). It isn\u2019t always as easy as that: in Myanmar, you\u2019ll need to toast with a hearty \u201cAung Myin Par Say!\u201d, and only after ordering \u201cbe ya ta khwet\u201d in your best Burmese. In neighbouring Thailand, the toast is a far more festive sounding \u2018Chok-dee!\u2019, which may be all you can manage having stuttered your way through \u2018\u201cOw bee-a neung krup\u201d\u2019 \u2013 \u201cone beer please, sir!\u201d (Be sure to swap out the \u2018krup\u2019 for \u2018ka\u2019<\/a> if the barman is a barwoman.)<\/p>\n

Taking the time to engage like this with the local culture can prompt further discoveries about the local beer-drinking culture. Curiously, the Thais and the Brits share a predilection for fried pork skin with their pints. The British call them pork scratchings, which doesn\u2019t make them any more appealing than they look. In Thailand, they soak the rind in dark soy sauce before serving.<\/p>\n
