This led to a significant rush of English settlers but also settlers of Irish and Scottish origin. Canada&#8217;s Constitutional Act of 1791 separated Canada into two provinces; the Upper Canada (Ontario) where the majority is English-speaking and the Lower Canada (Quebec) predominantly francophone. Patriots of the Lower Canada did rebel in 1837-1838 but it ended in a defeat.
