Family Friendly Providenciales

The Turks and Caicos Islands have been near the top of many most-popular Honeymoon destination lists, and for several years now. But what if you’re planning a Caribbean break with your family in tow? Is it a good destination to bring young kids, or should you consider a different destination? Whether you’re planning to stay exclusively in Provo (as locals call it), or stopping in for a day, there is plenty to do and for all ages.

It shouldn’t be a big surprise that the most popular activities for families involves the water in some way, and my whole family fell in love with beaches in Providenciales. Taylor Bay and Sapodilla Bay, are two favourites for families with children since they have calm, shallow waters. Snorkeling is possible in any number of locations and children eight and over can participate in SNUBA, a cross between scuba diving and snorkeling. They’ll be able to go down up to 20 feet with an attached breathing device and swim next to marine life.

If children are too young to snorkel or dive, glass bottom semi submarines take an hour long trip and it’s possible to observe coral and fish. Rent a boat as a family and either pilot it yourself or hire a captain for the day. Of course, you can always just hit the beach for swimming and sand castle building too. You simply must see Grace Bay Beach, it’s stunning.

For those that would prefer to stay dry, there are fun land activities as well. The Turks and Caicos National Museum provides visitors a glimpse into the history of the island from shipwrecks to pirates, and even a botanical garden showcasing the natural wonders of the island. The National Environment Centre is a great attraction for kids who love science and nature. It also provides a reprieve from the sun if it’s getting to be too much.

Off the northeast coast of Provo is Little Water Cay or Iguana Island. Rock iguanas are native to the Turks and Caicos and can be found in abundance on this island. The animals aren’t afraid of human visitors so it’s possible for children to really see them up close and personal. After visiting the iguanas, head back to the main island for horseback riding on the beach. There are rides available for all ages and ability levels.

When it’s time to grab some food there are several family-friendly restaurants on the island. For simple meals made up of kid friendly usuals, like burgers and sandwiches, Grill Rouge is a good choice. Hemingway’s Bar and Restaurant is on the beach and offers grilled items as well as Caribbean seafood favourites. For something a little nicer, Mango Reef connected to the Alexandra Resort and Spa offers open air dining and large menu loaded with Caribbean inspired dishes. For a much more relaxed meal when grabbing a bite in between activities, there are plenty of restaurants on the beaches and in town.

No matter what age your children are, there is plenty to do in Providenciales. Of course you can always have a truly relaxing getaway and do nothing at all here too! Even if you are a family that likes to stay busy and active when travelling, just make sure to slow part of your trip down and truly take in the view.

It’s one of my favourite family vacation destinations.
