Nicknamed the “Spice Island” for its prolific nutmeg production, Grenada offers a wonderful opportunity to unwind in a lush, tropical paradise. Explore historic forts with panoramic views across the island, laze on postcard-perfect beaches surrounded by palm trees and take a tour of the warehouses where local workers sort and process the nutmeg pods. Grenada enjoys a location in the warm and sunny Caribbean and is made up of one main island surrounded by smaller islands, such as Carriacou and Ronde Island. Learn about the history of the islands at the capital, St. George’s, a major port of entry for cruise ships. Fort George, a French fort built in 1705, dominates the skyline here. Explore the fort’s tunnels and head up to the top for views across the island. Continue up the west coast to the fishing village of Gouyave to visit the Nutmeg Processing Cooperative and inhale the fragrant scent of one of the island’s most famous spices. On the east coast, take some time to explore the Belmont Estate. This working plantation produces cocoa, cinnamon and ginger, among other crops. Sample Creole cuisine at an on-site restaurant and see ancient artifacts and hear traditional stories at the museum. No trip to Grenada is complete without some beach time. Head south of Grenada for La Sagesse Beach, a secluded stretch with a mixture of smooth sands and jagged rocks. Choose Anse La Roche Beach on Carriacou to snorkel over coral reefs and local marine animals. Fly into Maurice Bishop International Airport, which offers flights from major destinations in the United States and United Kingdom. On the island, taxis are easy to find and buses run frequently on weekdays. Temperatures are warm year round, but visit from January to April for the driest conditions.
