The cheapest days for domestic stays fall on 2 and 24 November
Newfoundland, Halifax and Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine are leading Canada’s leaf-peeping travel trend.
Expedia®’s Fall Travel Outlook, released today, reveals key dates for budget-friendly travel this season. For flights, the lowest fares can be found on 12 and 19 September domestically, along with 5 September and 30 October internationally. Travellers will find the best accommodation deals on 2 and 24 November, followed by 19 October. Overall, airfare is cheaper this fall, thanks to the shoulder season—when travel demand dips between the busy summer and winter holidays, leading to lower prices on both flights and accommodations.
“Fall is the sweet spot for savvy travellers,” said Melanie Fish, Head of Public Relations for Expedia Group Brands. “Not only are airfares dropping during the shoulder season, but hotel and vacation rental prices are as well. As a matter of fact, some vacation rentals available on Expedia can drop by up to 35 per cent in October compared to August.”[1]

What Trends are Driving Travel Demand This Fall?[4]
- Cultural Curiosity: This fall, Canadians are increasingly drawn to destinations that offer rich cultural experiences. While Paris, London and Rome remain firm favourites, Ghent, Belgium (+100%), Cologne, Germany (+85%) and Helsinki, Finland (+70%) are trending as authentic, culturally rich alternatives to more saturated European cities.
- Falling for Asia: Canadians’ appetite for Asian exploration shows no signs of slowing down this fall, but new Asian hotspots are proving popular, thanks to increased flight capacity. Tokyo remains the most popular international destination, with travel interest surging for Hong Kong (+175%), Shanghai, China (+100%), Okinawa, Japan (95%) and Phu Quoc, Vietnam (+90%).
- Dual of trends: Closer to home, two distinct patterns are emerging. Major cities like Toronto and Vancouver remain top picks, while more intimate, nature-rich destinations like Ucluelet (+70%), Revelstoke (+65%) and Prince Edward Island (+65%) are gaining momentum as travellers seek out coastal calm and crisp mountain air.
- Golden Getaways: Leaf-peeping is trending coast to coast, with surging interest in Newfoundland (+115%), Halifax (+90%), Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine (+85%), alongside classic favourites including Montreal, Niagara Falls and Québec City. With peak foliage expected from late September through mid-October, now is the time to plan a colourful escape.
