By the early 1980's, there were only twenty-two left on the face of the planet, all in California. Today, thanks to a massive effort to re-populate the species via in-captivity pairing, there are some two-hundred members. But their recovery is far from assured. The Oregon Zoo has undertaken its own recovery effort whose ultimate goal is the re-introduction of the species into the protected wilderness area around the Columbia River Gorge. In short, to bring them home. For now, they live out their days in a vast, outdoor aviary designed specifically to mimic their habitat in the wild. If you have never seen one up close before, I urge you to come take a look. They are larger than any flying bird you will ever see, unless you go to Peru. And though black and white practically from head to toe, their plumage shines and reflects the light like dark, polished metal. If that doesn't suit your fancy, I will tell you that, as with all big birds, if you wait around long enough, they will do something so awe-inspiring that it will take your breath away, and something so goofy that you will laugh out loud. The whole property is relaxing and beautiful. The house had plenty of room and is beautifully decorated to feel like you are walking into a home and not another random rental. The bed is one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking and the grill outside was very clean and easy to use. My favorite part about this place was the sauna and cold plunge. It didn’t take too long to heat up and is literally the place to melt all your worries away. Beautiful woodworking inside while you look out into an organic garden. It’s heaven. The host was incredible at directions and followed up quickly with any questions. Check out was the easiest I have had in a long time. You don’t have pages of things to do before you leave. We took advantage of all the amenities on the property besides the fire pit. The house has a very cozy, quiet and peaceful feel to it. We were gone most of the day exploring the sites of the Gorge (and Portland) but we could've just as easily stayed at the house all day and enjoyed the propery. We were there for three nights but wish we would've stayed for at least five. Looking forward to returning one day! We visited in July but seems like a great year-around destination. ##### Luke A.
