I sit and absorb the soothing impact of pale walls against honeyed woodwork, the abundance of flowing space and the unusual sense of tranquility that one feels here. My eye delights in the detail of the solid mantel-pieces that rest above the eight fireplaces, the perfectly chosen artwork that is redolent of a long-ago, somehow simpler, time and the light…always the glorious abundance of light that fills the house.' ...St Marys Magazine A 1907 Historic Home located in the heart of the historic district of St. Marys, Ga. A traditional 'foursquare' design, and one of the first homes in the area constructed of an unusual type of block (known as granitoid, rarely seen in South Georgia). The home has five bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a formal dining room and comfortable living room. While the home has been modernized (central heating and air conditioning, modern kitchen, and more), one can still appreciate the original details of hardwood floors, large windows, dramatically high ceilings and two large porches - all surrounded by a half acre of camellias, azaleas, roses, magnolia, oak, camphor, cedar and persimmon trees, scuppernong grapes and a variety of other lush plantings. Saint Marys .... For those of you who are not familiar with St. Marys, allow me to acquaint you with this wonderful small town. Located on the banks of the St. Marys River, the town is the second oldest in the U.S, following St. Augustine, Florida. It is in the Southeast-most corner of Georgia, nestled just west of Cumberland Island and east of Highway I-95\. Jacksonville International Airport is only 30 minutes away. It is centrally located between Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach and Jekyll Island/St. Simon's Island/Sea Island. Once in St. Marys however, it feels a world away. Everyone greets you with a smile, and strangers wave hello. St. Marys was named The Best Small Town in America by Money Magazine, and is the site of the 2004 HGTV Dream Home. It was also recently highlighted in Southern Living Magazine. The town is small and quiet with moss draped oaks and a charming atmosphere. The house is within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. Bikes and golf carts are available to rent. A kayak outfitter offers a variety of trips for all levels of experience. Or try your hand at fishing from the pier or in the river and tidal area. The Rose-Lovell House is just two blocks from the Cumberland Island Ferry and public boat ramp. It is a 45-minute ferry ride to what the Travel Channel has ordained as 'America’s Most Beautiful Wilderness Beach'. Stroll the trails and beaches and catch a glimpse of wild horses, dolphins, white tailed deer, armadillos, wild turkeys and a variety of other birds. Stop in to the St. Marys Visitor's Center for information regarding activites, restaurants and local history. Meet at the flagpole on the waterfront to join the historic tram tour. Head 45 minutes west to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. James Oglethorpe first built on Cumberland Island in 1736, building a hunting lodge that he named Dungeness. Oglethorpe named the place after Dungeness, in England. The next Dungeness was the legacy of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, who had acquired 11,000 acres of island land in exchange for a bad debt. His widow built a four-story tabby mansion in 1803, over a Timucuan shell mound. During the War of 1812 the island was occupied by the British, who used the house as a headquarters. In 1818 Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, a dashing cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War and father of Robert E. Lee, stayed at the house until his death on March 25, 1818, cared for by Greene's daughter Louisa, and was laid to rest in nearby cemetery with full military honors provided by an American fleet stationed at St. Marys, Georgia. The house was abandoned during the U.S. Civil War and burned in 1866. In the 1880s the property was purchased by Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of Andrew Carnegie, who began to build a new mansion on the site. The 59-room Queen Anne style mansion and grounds were completed after Carnegie's death in 1886. His wife Lucy continued to live at Dungeness and built other estates for her children, including Greyfield for Margaret Carnegie, Plum Orchard for George Lauder Carnegie, and Stafford Plantation. By this time, the Carnegies owned 90% of the island. The Carnegies moved out of Dungeness in 1925. In 1959 the Dungeness mansion was destroyed by fire, alleged to be arson. The ruins are today preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cumberland Island National Seashore. The decor and furnishings made us feel at home, cozy and pampered. The kitchen became a gathering place as was the bright and comfy living room with plenty of seating. Each of us in our group of 5 had our own bedroom, and with 3 baths, there was no problem with space to get ready. Our only wish is that we could have stayed longer to take advantage of areas of the house we didn't have time to use (the gorgeous dining room, the second story balcony). This property is not a property that is decorated to be minimally acceptable - it truly is like you are in someone's home with books, artwork, linens etc. that make a house a home. The host was wonderful, providing proactive communication so our booking, access and stay were easy. Had everything we needed for our 4 generations to enjoy our time together, play games and cook together. Great location for easy walk to riverfront, playground and churches. Sharing bathrooms was not a difficult as expected. The location was ideal and close to everything! The rooms and kitchen worked well for our family, but I wouldn’t recommend this home for multiple families or friends, as the bathrooms are small and down the hall. Plus, 2 have showers and one only a tub. Coffee maker worked well and we found the basic kitchen supplies we needed. Home was easy to heat. I was disappointed with the entry as we arrived. The front porch is in need of some cleaning and upkeep and the front yard is mostly sand. There’s just one parking space in the drive due to a shared driveway w an apartment in the back that we weren’t aware of There is street and side yard parking so it worked. Not as much privacy since tenant was there. Overall, we were comfortable and the check in/out process was very easy. I liked the keyless entry also. ##### Anne W. Everything about the house was fantastic. My 5 year old said it was a castle, not a house.lol We were lucky enough to book for the 4th of July.
