Lake Nahwatzel is a unique gem that is nestled at the base of the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. The Lake is located in the middle of vast timberlands on the edge of the Olympic National Forest and was an integral part of the early days of logging. We who are lucky enough to live here feel blessed that our piece of paradise is far enough away from the bustle of the state capital Olympia, but close enough to take advantage of the many amenities available in the more urban areas. Lake Nahwatzel is home to eagles and osprey, deer and elk, beavers and otters and everything in between. Though summer is the time most people think of summer activities like swimming, kayaking and fishing, winter has it's own charm when the swans, shorebirds and other migrating birds arrive. Winter is quiet, serene and peaceful, you can imagine the rest of the world no longer exists. In the spring, if you are lucky, you will hear the haunting call of the loon. Nahwatzel Lake is open year-round for fishing, and is stocked each spring and fall exclusively with larger rainbow trout averaging a pound a piece. But it also receives larger rainbows from 3 to 8 pounds each, making it a great destination for quality trout fishing in Mason County. The next large fish stock for Lake Nahwatzel begins 4/23/25. We are extra fortunate, because we are the last house at the end of the road; and nothing and no one are beyond us for many miles. If you are looking for solitude, or fun on the water, look here! Read a book, take out a canoe, plunk a fishing lure into the water off the cabins private pier, or explore the many sights of the Olympic Peninsula, using this as a starting or stopping point. You can take the ferry to Seattle, visit Mt. Rainier, discover our state capital, or snuggle in and hide from the world. This is a generational family owned home, with good potable water, bordered by private forest without traffic and plenty of peace! We look forward to sharing our special space with you. The only thing we missed out on was a day hike because it was bear cub season and a nighttime fire because of dry conditions which they had no control over. Rarely does a vacation rental exceed our expectations, but Sunrise Cabin certainly did! Wow, spectacular views of the lake and forest surrounding the cabin. Coming from a city, the best part was the quiet, peace and tranquility offered by its superb location right next to the water and away from any traffic or road noise. There are neighbors on one side, but they are not close and the cabin remains very private. The hosts, Betsy and Dave, were warm, welcoming and so generous for sharing their amazing cabin with us. We had so much fun on the kayaks and canoe! Lake Nahwazel is the perfect size lake, not too big and not too small. Excellent for novices to the more advanced at water sports. In addition to the water activities, there are hiking trails around the cabin allowing for long nature walks. The cabin was very clean, comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped. There are restaurants in the nearby town of Shelton (12 miles away), but we opted to buy groceries at the Shelton Safeway and enjoy all of our meals on the cabin's fabulous deck overlooking the lake. We did not want to leave the spectacular view! It does not get any better than this setting. We will definitely make it a point to return again and again to enjoy this serene, tranquil and peaceful cabin.
