Er befindet sich im Obergeschoß des zwischen 1615 - bis 1620 von Elias Holl erbauten Rathauses. Er ist einer der bedeutendsten Kulturdenkmäler der Spätrenaissance in Deutschland. Das Rathaus und auch der goldene Saal mit seine Fürstenzimmern wurde im Februar 1944 durch britische Bomber vollkommen zerstört. Das jetzige Rathaus und der goldene Saal sind eine aufwendige Rekonstruktion aus den 90ziger Jahren des letzten Jahrtausend und haben fast 10 Jahre gedauert.
