#### Encounter endemic and rare species and climb to the emerald mountains tops for picturesque views of the beaches and forest.

The Reserva Serra das Emerências is a vast pocket of Atlantic forest with brilliant green peaks and wonderful views of the ocean. Myriad trails meander through the reserve, which is known for its rare species, including the golden lion tamarin. Hike through the dense and unspoiled forest for a close look at its natural treasures.

Inspect some of the endemic vegetation, such as the pilosocereus ulei cactus, decorating the reserve. A great range of shrubs, bushes and trees can be found in the sheltered surroundings of the forest. Notice the abundance of the restinga trees that are typical of Brazil’s Atlantic Coast and the pau brasil, which is the national tree. Try to spot the rare golden lion tamarin, which is a type of New World monkey with reddish-gold fur. 

Climb some of the steeper trails that lead to the tops of mountains and snap photos of the stunning views from above. These vantage points provide you with a sense of the shape of the peninsula containing Búzios. Enjoy the complete tranquility on the top of these remote and quiet summits. The daring among you may join the hang gliders soaring from the cliffs on breezy days.

Relax on a hilltop overlooking Tucuns Beach, Caravelas Beach or José Gonçalves Beach and watch the waves crashing into the intriguing rock formations below. Bring food and drink for a picnic in these scenic surroundings. Make sure to bring enough snacks and water for your trip. Consider wearing repellent to keep the bugs away.

The Reserva Serra das Emerências is at the southern end of Tucuns Beach at the start of the headland containing Búzios. Drive southwest from the core of the town for 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) and get to the reserve in 25 minutes. Explore the nearby sights, including Ferradura Lagoon, Ferradurinha Beach and Geriba Beach.
