Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go to Pico?

The best time to go to Pico is during the warmer months, specifically from May to September, to fully enjoy the island's natural beauty and outdoor activities.May and June offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and the island is lush and green after the spring rains. This is an excellent time for hiking the various trails, including the ascent of Mount Pico itself, as the weather is generally clear and not too hot. It's also a good period for whale and dolphin watching, as many species are active in the waters around Pico.July and August are the peak summer months, with the warmest weather and calmest seas, making them ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and enjoying the island's natural swimming pools carved into the volcanic rock. The vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are at their most vibrant, and you can enjoy wine tastings and learn about the unique viticulture. This period is superb for couples seeking a relaxing break with plenty of sunshine and opportunities for water-based activities.September still offers lovely weather, warm seas, and fewer visitors than the peak summer months. It's a fantastic time for those who prefer a quieter experience while still being able to enjoy all the outdoor activities Pico has to offer, from exploring the Gruta das Torres lava cave to coastal walks.
