I had already paid for the trip in full and agreed to VRBOs terms and conditions. I complied because I didn't want to risk being 12 degree weather with my family and no place to stay, but I think this practice is unethical. At minimum, they should communicate in the listing that they have these requirements. Waiting until after they've received payment and the cancelation period has past is shady.
