#### Hike in this desert oasis, where an abundance of wildlife and vegetation is supported by a series of streams, pools and waterfalls.

The beautiful Ein Gedi Nature Reserve sits on the shores of the Dead Sea like a great oasis in the heart of the Judean Desert. Follow the tree-lined streams as they disappear into steep canyons to discover the region’s surprisingly abundant flora and fauna.

Spend a day or more hiking in the nature reserve. While it is not a vast area, and could easily be visited in a single day, it is a place where you should take your time and soak up the beauty of the desert. Horned ibex climb high up on impossibly steep cliffs and rock hyrax scuttle under crumbling stones. Dragonflies swoop over the streams and pool. The area is an important stopover for birds on their north-south migration routes in between Africa and Europe. Look closely and you might also see vulture nests in the rocks.

The nature reserve is fed by four springs: David, Arugot, Shulamit and Gedi. Together they have created a patchwork of streams, pools and waterfalls, including the impressive David Waterfall, which gives life to the otherwise barren desert. Select one of the marked trails, which vary between 1 mile (1.5 kilometers) and 2.5 miles (4 kilometers), and head off to explore this unique landscape. In the summer, when desert temperatures can get high, take a refreshing dip in one of the pools for a unique experience.

Notice the different types of plants that grow along the streams here. Euphrates poplars and several species of acacias can be seen as well as desert date, elephant grass, giant reed and willow. The ibex, which are similar to wild goats, often come down from the cliffs to drink and take shelter from the sun, and close encounters are common.

By car, the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve is 1.5 hours from Jerusalem and 2 hours from Tel Aviv. A handful of long distance buses stop at the reserve. There is an entry fee, which also grants admission to the nearby antiquities park. The nature reserve is open daily.

All in all, wasn't a bad stay. A couple stars were knocked off though by the fact that the television in the room was glitching, or just refusing to work at all. A technician was sent up 4 times over 2 days, and it never fixed the problem. Also, the HVAC was either arctic or sweltering, and wouldn't allow you to just run the fan for air circulation. 71 was about 80, and 69 was 60\. Ended up getting moved to another tower (Went from Opal to Canyon), the room in the canyon tower was better HVAC wise, but the TV was still glitching. I usually wouldn't care about the TV, but I am a nerd for the olympics. Positives. Pretty good food options, if i was a richer man, I would've hit up NOBU for sure. But $35 for one piece of Toro is a bit ridiculous. Great entertainment in the lobby bar, the open mic night was extremely entertaining, as well as the badass completely hilarious horn player / comedian. Room was clean, air well filtered in the casino from the cig smoke. Negatives Besides the TV/HVAC. RESORT FEES. Vegas is down about 10% on visitors. Theres a reason why. The fees and insane prices on a bottle of water are ridiculous. Honestly you have people come to the desert, and charge that for water, it's more expensive to stay properly hydrated if you get water at the shops on property than it is for your entire room fee (Not including the resort fee). This isn't just a "Virgin" thing, It's citywide pretty much. I used to go to Vegas multiple times a year. No longer.

The sheets had stains on the when we arrived. The room was outdated but for the price we did kind of expect that. I was told we would have to pay extra for any additional sheets however when I told them they had already started out looking dirty they finally gave us new, but that was several nights into the stay. Most staff didn't speak english so there wasn't great communication or friendliness. It was nice to have the pool and beach within walking distance. Windows would open but no screens which was disappointing because if you wanted fresh air there was a fear of birds flying in. We also had a decent leak from our AC unit running down through the drywall causing it to bubble up and pool on the floor which caused me to slip and fall.
