Paraná is one of the three states that make up Brazil’s South Region. It’s a place that has varied attractions to match the diversity of its topography and ethnicity. Admire majestic waterfalls, trek in national parks, beach-hop and visit energetic cities. Paraná was first inhabited by indigenous tribes Europeans began arriving in the 1500s and helped develop the state’s wealth through agricultural endeavors.

Paraná’s main attraction is [Iguaçu Falls](https://www.expedia.ca/Iguacu-Falls-Puerto-Iguazu.d6171509.Vacation-Attraction), a natural wonder made up of some 275 rushing waterfalls. It sits in [Parque Nacional do Iguaçu](https://www.expedia.ca/Parque-Nacional-Do-Iguacu-Foz-Do-Iguacu.d6098540.Vacation-Attraction), which straddles the border between Brazil and Argentina. One of these is Itaipu Dam, a hydroelectric power plant and ground-breaking feat of engineering.

Travel inland across rolling green hills and past vast meadows to Ponta Grossa. This is the jumping off point for hiking trips amid the dramatic rock formations of Parque Estadual de Vila Velha. Like much of the rest of Brazil, there is no shortage of beaches along Paraná’s Atlantic coastline. Reach the state of Paraná by flying to the international airports at Curitiba and Foz do Iguaçu. Get between destinations via bus or rent a car and explore at your own pace along the well-maintained roads.
