The Flaming Tar Barrels are carried through the streets of the town to the delight of thousands of townsfolk and visitors, something that has become very well known throughout the years. Ottery St. Mary is internationally renowned for its Tar Barrels – the event is said to have originated in the 17th century, and is held each year. Each of Ottery’s central public houses sponsors a single barrel. Surrounded by a large green garden and woodland and hedgerow. It is off the beaten track but this made it perfect for a quiet getaway. Waking in the morning to see a deer grazing was an absolute treat. Also got visited by a Pheasant as well as a very healthy looking fox!! A previous review mentioned some dodgy Wifi, but after bumping into the lovely owner of the property it got resolved, so absolutely no complaints at all.
