![Located on the northeast coast of São Miguel, Farol do Arnel was the first lighthouse to be built in the Azores, and began operation on 26 November 1876.  

It’s still a working lighthouse today, 141 years later, and is open for guided tours every Wednesday afternoon.  As luck would have it, we were there on a Wednesday afternoon, but we only discovered this fact when the lighthouse keeper saw us poking around and invited us inside.

A word of warning though: if you plan to visit Farol do Arnel, park your car at the top and walk down – unless you’re a very competent driver or have an addiction to adrenaline and danger.

« We had a great holiday in this cottage, fully consistent with its description. The place is very quiet, the view of the sea is very beautiful, the garden is magnificent, and the swimming pool, although small, is very pleasant. The house is very clean and very well maintained. It is not very wide but more than enough for 2 weeks of vacation for 4 people, and well equipped. « The property was clean and in a great location. It was charming in many ways and very well priced. However, it is quite an old and not updated property, so just be mindful that there are no air conditioning or fans in the hot weather, so it can get a bit stuffy. Also be wary that any food left on the counter will immediately attract ants. It was still worth the price and location, but it is an old house, and comes with the associated issues. »
