Nanki-Shirahama Marriott Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"The staff were wonderful in general. They helped us to send our bags to Osaka as well as you can't take big bags with you to the Koyasan. Coffee was good. A bit tricky if you are vegetarian in general though at Shirahama. Your best bet is the Lawson Supermarket."

Grand Mercure Wakayama Minabe Resort & Spa

Grand Mercure Wakayama Minabe Resort & Spa

10/10 Excellent
"While our stay at this location was short, it was fantastic. They have put in quite a bit of work to make the hotel clean and well taken care of, they rent electric assist bicycles to get to town for groceries or exploring. My family loved the hot springs. Laundry onsite. Beautiful beach nearby, although not great for swimming or snorkeling it was very pretty, quiet, and private. Staff is incredibly helpful. They sell packages that include breakfast and dinner, but not lunch. The buffets are HUGE with tons of food and drink options. I 100% would stay here again."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Nakahechi?
The best area to stay in Nakahechi is around the main Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, specifically in the villages of Takijiri-oji and Chikatsuyu-oji. These locations offer convenient access to the trail and provide a genuine experience of the region.Takijiri-oji is the traditional starting point for the Nakahechi route. Staying here allows you to begin your pilgrimage early in the morning, often directly from your accommodation. The village is small, with a few guesthouses and a visitor centre. It's ideal for solo travellers or couples who want to start their trek with ease and connect with other pilgrims.Chikatsuyu-oji, further along the Nakahechi route, is another excellent choice, particularly for those looking for a mid-point stop with more amenities. This village is larger than Takijiri-oji and offers a greater selection of guesthouses, small restaurants, and basic shops. It's a good fit for couples who appreciate having more dining options after a day of walking, while still being directly on the pilgrimage path.
When is the best time to go to Nakahechi?
The best times to go to Nakahechi are during the spring (late March to May) and autumn (late September to November) months.Spring offers mild temperatures, making it ideal for walking the ancient pilgrimage trails without the discomfort of heat or cold. You'll also see the landscape come alive with new growth. This season is particularly good for those seeking a tranquil and reflective journey, as the weather is generally settled and pleasant.Autumn provides cooler, crisp weather and the stunning display of changing leaves, known as koyo. The vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of the trees along the Kumano Kodo trails create a truly scenic backdrop for your walks.
