#### The museum’s prehistoric tools, figurines and temple altars reveal much about Malta’s past and the ancient peoples who inhabited the island.

Pick up lots of fascinating insights into prehistoric Malta when you visit the National Museum of Archaeology. Investigate ancient artifacts that are more than 7,000 years old. The collection is housed inside the Auberge de Provence, one of the first buildings to be constructed in Valletta after the Great Siege of 1565. 

Tour the rooms that cover the Neolithic period and view tools and other relics that help tell the story of early human settlement of the Maltese islands. Go to the Main Hall to see the temple carvings. Study the patterns and carved representations of animals on the altar blocks. Admire the artistry of figurines with unusually rotund forms. They were created by the Red Skorba people. One of the noteworthy pieces is the *Sleeping Lady*, a figure of a woman lying on her side. 

Look over the Bronze Age daggers that were excavated from the Tarxien Temples, a megalithic temple complex built between 3,600 and 2,500 B.C.

In other rooms, find displays of flint tools, pottery, jewels and ornaments. The museum also hosts a number of temporary exhibitions that tend to cover different periods of the history of the islands.

In addition to examining the archaeological findings, take the time to appreciate the grand building, including the ornate décor of the Grand Salon. Appreciate the wooden beamed ceiling and the lavish paintwork on the walls. The room was once used as a banqueting hall by the Knights of the Order of Saint John.

The museum opens every day from morning until evening. There is a small fee for admission with various discounts available, such as half price tickets for children.

The National Museum of Archaeology is situated in the city center, between the National Museum of Fine Arts and St. John’s Cathedral. There are plenty of boutiques and cafés in the area, as well as the Embassy Shopping Center and the National Library of Malta.

We stayed in the more expensive renovated part of this hotel and it was exquisite. The beds were good but they need to be regularly turned around as one side is high and the other low as that is the side everyone sleeps on. My only other bed comment is that the hotel needs to invest in fitted bottom sheets. The ones they have are not huge and the slip out from being tucked in. Just annoying. Otherwise a first class hotel!

Our stay started with some challenges, but the hotel made every effort to turn things around. Check-in was delayed well past the guaranteed 3 pm time, and by 5 pm we were still waiting to get into our room. After approaching the reception multiple times, we were finally given access, though no one had contacted us directly when the room was ready. Unfortunately, the room’s cleanliness wasn’t up to standard, with hair, crumbs on the floor, and a dirty refrigerator. At this point, I returned to reception and asked if an upgrade was available, even at additional cost. To their credit, the staff handled the situation very well and moved us into a complimentary suite. They also surprised us with champagne in our room to celebrate our anniversary, which was a thoughtful touch. Although we felt that the first day was lost due to these issues, the way the hotel responded made a significant difference. From that point on, our holiday went exactly as we had planned, and we were able to relax and enjoy our stay. Overall, while the start was rocky, the service recovery and gestures from the staff left us with a positive impression.
