The Monumento a Rubén Darío is a statue with enormous cultural importance in the heart of Managua. The white structure, which stands in the center of a water feature, depicts national poet Rubén Darío amid a heavenly scene of angelic figures on a boat. Snap photos of this historic statue and learn of its significance. Rubén Darío is one of Nicaragua’s most iconic figures, having heavily influenced the modernist literary movement at the end of the 19th century. Gaze up at the poet’s robed figure, with his sculpted hand on his heart. It is 20 feet (6.2 meters) tall. Notice the swans that flank both sides of the boat at the base of the monument. Inspect the charming fountain in which the work of art stands. On the tall base below the statue, read the lines of Spanish from some of his iconic poems. The angelic figures represent the mythological muses of Polymnia, Calliope and Erato. The sculptures of Cupid and Psyche are from the 2nd-century story *Metamorphoses*. Note that the statue was built in 1933, before falling into disrepair. Over the years, locals protested against the poor state of the statue of the nation’s favorite son, until the government finally completely refurbished and reopened it in 1998, with financial aid from Texaco Oil. Visit the monument, which is free and open to the public at all times. Stroll leisurely along the spacious Plaza de la Revolución to see some of the main highlights of Managua. The Monumento a Rubén Darío is near the Plaza de la Revolución, in the historic center of Managua. It can be found in the northern part of the city, just a few blocks south of Xolotlán Lake, also known as Lake Managua. (187 reviews) Very walkable location, central to lots of food/things to do. The hotel itself is beautiful and very clean, with super nice and accommodating staff (Issac is the best!). The pool is pretty small, definitely not for swimming and mostly just for lounging/kids. The restaurant is a bit pricey but the food is so delicious it’s worth it! Still dreaming of their chicken alfredo. Sadly our trip was cut short and we only stayed one night instead of two, the hotel doesn’t allow refunds, but we would definitely stay again and were sad we missed our second night! (The laundry service was also super articulate for how inexpensive it was - around $15USD for an entire laundry bag full). (133 reviews) Pros: beautiful property in the middle of the jungle, private beach, and delicious food at the restaurant. They were very kind to upgrade our room close to the beach. It was a beautiful 2-story villa with a kitchen, private pool, a balcony, and AC in the bedroom. Cons: lack of honesty and services Leading up to the trip, we received a few emails telling us about all the activities and services available in the resort. They offered complementary hiking and snorkeling, and we could pay for yoga classes, spa treatments, romantic packages, and activities such as surfing, hikes on Mombacho and Omepete island, etc. None of that was available once we got there. We asked the reception to book activities and they said they would call amd organize them. They never did. After a few days, we decided to book them ourselves through tour websites. We even asked them to call a nearby golfing course and they said they would. After 3 days, they said the golf course hadn't answered yet. My partner emailed the golf course and we got a response within 5 minutes. The staff at the reception were very kind, but not helpful and the lack of honestly from the management really disappointed us. The restaurant staff were always great and the service was excellent. The reception even gave us the wrong opening hours for the restaurant so we showed up late one evening. The staff were still there and were so extremely kind to prepare us a meal even after closing.
