Hi Laurence, I am so sorry to read this. We take so much pride in the hospitality we provide and in our California Beach House. We always strive to improve and deliver the most amazing Malibu experience. We are all in the business of hospitality because we truly care about making people happy and we are saddened to hear that you are not. In regards to your concerns that we are not directly on the sand, we do not hide the fact that we are across the street from the beach. It is stated on our website in the very first sentence, on all other booking platforms and even our actual address states we are located on the PCH, clearly showing on the map. When we spoke to your assistant, multiple times, we made it very clear that we were not located on the sand, but rather directly across the road, facing the ocean and sand. I apologize that was not relayed to you and that you were unable to check our website. It feels unreasonable to give us such a harsh review regarding something we do not claim to be. That said, we did our absolute best to still make your Malibu experience wonderful, by providing an early check in, scheduling multiple surf lessons for your son, offering to personally walk you across the street and get you set up on the beach with our complimentary beach umbrellas, towels, SUPs and even offering to deliver you food & drinks to the sand. We were really excited to have you with us and genuinely believe that, had you given us the opportunity to give you The Surfrider experience and not decided to stay elsewhere after arriving, you would have had a fabulous few days. We will absolutely take your feedback onboard and do everything in our power to ensure we manage expectations regarding the sand in the future. We truly hope you enjoyed your Malibu time, regardless. As seen on our website all of our rooms (besides our two suites) are 250 square feet and we are located on iconic Pacific Coast Highway. You stayed in our Pacific Room that has beautiful views of Surfrider Beach and the Malibu Pier but am sorry you found the view poor. Our Food and Beverage Staff is also instructed to leave the morning coffee orders outside of the room if the occupants do not answer the door. This was the case for both of your morning orders. We wish this was something that was brought to our attention during your stay as we could have done something to accommodate you. We really hope to get the opportunity to make your next stay a perfect one!

While we are located on the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, we were extremely conscious of this when renovating the property and installed triple paned noise cancelling glass in our sliding glass doors. Each room also contains a complimentary white noise machine for those who might be a bit more sensitive to outside noise. I do apologize that you were unhappy with the size of your room. We aimed to recreate The Surfrider's roots, a classic 1950's Californian motel into the boutique hotel that it is today. Although the rooms are smaller, this allows us to capitalize on the guest experience and personal touch that you can't find at larger hotels. We understand that it is not for everyone and are disappointed you were not satisfied! We did see the negative in-house feedback you left while staying with us but when we reached out, we did not receive a response. It is unfortunate that you requested a cancellation of your reservation that did not fall within the hotel’s cancellation policy. It was within our nonrefundable cancellation window and therefore we are not able to refund or move the booking. Our policy is explicitly stated on our website and again upon booking.
