There have been many improvements in recent years. They have maintained the beautiful Honduran mahogany cabins in their original design and function. The rooms are certainly large enough. The bathroom is rather small, but adequate. Because every room is in a thick, mountain rainforest, they are rather dark. Not all the lamps worked. Ceiling fans and A/C were good. Some would call the rooms rustic. Even a rainy hour gives you a chance to listen to the jungle while lying in a hammock listening to the bird and watching the agoutis. The grounds were meticulously manicured, with beautiful plants and tropical blooms at every turn. Cacao trees filled the forest as well as tropical birds and animals. Guided hikes, spa, exhibits of butterflies and local reptiles and snakes. This is not an inexpensive facility, but I felt it was worth the price for a relaxing and interesting place to visit. Almost every employee I met was bilingual in Spanish and English. Good WiFi, no TV in rooms. The food was good with sufficient choices for dinner. Service is excellent. Well-stocked bar and cellar. On our recent trip there during a national holiday, it was a full house, but we never felt crowded. There were many hummingbird feeders with plenty of birds around at all times. There are several good trails we walked early in the morning and were pleased to see many toucans. The cabin was clean and the AC cooled it in short time. The food at the restaurant was excellent and varied, and the service was even better. This was my 3rd if not 4th time to this hotel and always a wonderful experience. The hotel rooms, grounds, restaurant and people are always wonderful. The Lodge at Pico Bonito was excellent. It is in a beautiful location in a national park, it's full of birds and other animals and colourful tropical flowers. The reception staff were always helpful, especially with organizing a doctor as my husband was unwell (nothing to do with the Lodge). The food in the restaurant was spot on, but be careful, as the portions are big (at least in my opinion, for others they might be the right size). Staff was very helpful and friendly. Good with very good with a nice selection. It can be a place for just simply relaxation to more activities of hikes and excursions. Awesome massage with beautiful facilities. The only two downsides was the terrible mattress...sleeping was painful and the hot tub was not working to work out the soreness. It was cool and rainy and the hot tub was one of the reasons we picked this place. Instead I found only about four individual butterflies in the large covered Butterfly House, It was most disappointing and frustrating. I was most unhappy. Although I enjoy the birds I have seen most of the species around the lodge, and they were much fewer in number than I have seen in Belize, Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico. The snorkeling trip to Cayos Cochinos was awful - impossible boat - and where we did get in the water there was poor visibility and few fish. I dove these islands with my late husband about 13 years ago and found it a great experience, This trip was really bad. I wish I had saved my money and gone to another area.
