Magasinez, mangez et promenez-vous autant que le cœur vous en dit dans cette place située au bord de l'eau, qui tient son nom du romancier qui y a grandi. 

Allez au Jack London Square pour passer un après-midi décontracté à déambuler dans les sentiers qui longent l'eau ou pour siroter une bière dans la taverne où l'auteur de *L'appel de la forêt* s'installait pour boire. Magasinez dans l'un des meilleurs magasins d'Oakland et allez déguster une cuisine raffinée dans l'un des nombreux restaurants donnant sur l'eau.

Le Jack London Square était autrefois le cœur de toute l'activité portuaire d'Oakland. Le romancier et militant Jack London y a passé son enfance à observer le va-et-vient des bateaux et à étudier les personnages qui peuplaient le port. Aujourd'hui, le secteur est l'une des attractions les plus intéressantes d'Oakland, offrant à la fois une vue saisissante sur le bord de l'eau, d'excellents magasins et restaurants et des activités sportives comme le kayak et le jogging.

Allez faire un tour dans le bar Heinold's First and Last Chance. Ce bar, qui a été construit en 1883 avec du bois provenant d'un vieux baleinier, était l'endroit où Jack London avait l'habitude de venir boire. Tout à côté de l'édifice se trouve une réplique du chalet dans lequel habitait London à l'époque où il vivait au Yukon, dont il s'est inspiré pour *L'appel de la forêt*. La réplique a été bâtie avec certaines des pièces de bois du chalet original.

Suivez la promenade de Jack London, un chemin qui relie le Heinold's Saloon et le Potomac, le yacht présidentiel. Des anecdotes concernant le romancier sont inscrites sur des panneaux en forme de diamant le long du chemin.

Les mordus de magasinage seront choyés ils trouveront plusieurs grands magasins et boutiques sur la place. Recherchez le marché Jack London, où de nombreux kiosques proposent de produits alimentaires locaux.

Profitez du coucher de soleil caractéristique de la côte ouest en sirotant une bière ou un verre de vin dans l'un des nombreux bars. L'été, allez voir la place les soirs de fin de semaine: des films y sont régulièrement projetés en plein air. Dans les restaurants de fruits de mer, commandez la prise du jour, puis allez danser dans l'une des boîtes de nuit du coin.

Le Jack London Square se trouve à quelques minutes de marche du centre-ville d'Oakland. Vous pouvez vous y rendre en traversier, en autobus ou en métro (BART). Une navette gratuite assure la liaison entre la station de métro et la place.
