Everybody kept to themselves for the most part but the staff and the visitors are open to engage if you're willing to. The bedding is quite thin and you may feel the wood beneath it if you're in the dorm so if that's not your cup of tea, i would recommend against it. Traditional Japanese style hostel. The staff is really kind and helpful. The other guests were also really nice people and interesting to talk with. My only con and reason why I gave an overall rating at 3/5 starts: the bed and pillow was horrible to sleep on. I ended up getting very little sleep the whole trip because my back was in serious pain and my neck was killing me from the pillow - i actually think it was all due to the pillow and not so much the mattress. There was absolutely no neck support and it left me with horrible neck and headaches throughout the day. Also I was in a bottom sleeping bed and it was really hot, but that's honestly something that can't be helped except to turn up the A/C in which case the top bunks get real cold, so not much that can be done there. A small bar in the lounge which looks pretty cozy. Need to pay 100 yen for a toothbrush, another 100 yen for towel (I think it's standard for hostel stay). Owners are polite but don't expect too much hospitality. I stayed in a mixed dorm which is in 1st floor beside the lounge. Toilet, shower all in the same space with the beds. There was not too much open space for luggage, 1 suitcase for each guest and the floor is full. Bed is comfortable but on the narrow side.
