It has a fantastic view of the surrounding mountain range at 1,050 meters above sea level. Much of this island is part of the Yakushina National Park and also a World Natural Heritage site. *From the entrance of Shiratani Unsuikyo, it's about a 6km-hike round trip. Some places have a clear path, others a pink ribbon is your only guide. But it is an easy hiking course and a great place for beginners to explore Yakushima National Park. Shiratani Unsuikyo is famous for Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke, but it's also a great hiking spot for both beginners and long-time hikers. This was on our hike up to Taiko-iwa. This beach is not only a great spot to watch the beautiful sunsets, but is also the most popular place for sea turtles to lay their eggs in Japan. Every year many turtles come back to this shore from May to July.
