Oceanfront Historic Retreat You ll feel like you ve stepped back in time when you enter The Del Mar Ocean Front Historic Retreat. This 1930s home is located directly on the sand and is unique from its vintage Spanish-style furnishings to its winding passageways. This rambling home sleeps up to fourteen people in its seven bedrooms. There s a 3-car garage and extra parking spaces for at least 5 additional cars behind the front gate, so this home is ideal for multiple families or surfers looking for a fun getaway. A lifeguard tower is just steps away from the home, which helps ensure a safer summertime beach experience. The beach is wide and the surfing is great (it s a beach break). This home is within walking distance to fine oceanfront dining and fun shopping in the village of Del Mar. Nearby Powerhouse Park provides a spot for a seaside picnic or free weekly concerts in the summer. You can also walk to the Del Mar Racetrack from this vintage home. The world-renowned championship Torrey Pines Golf Course is just a short drive away. If you re in the mood for communing with nature, you ll also be wowed by Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, where you ll find a choice of trails to explore, all overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, this home is not suitable for small children, due to the risk of falling from the 2nd floor down to the 1st floor below. Injury and/or death could occur from a fall. \- Please note that early check-ins and late check-outs are available at our discretion. There are extra fees for either of these add-ons when available. \- The fireplace is to not be utilized. ​​​​​​​CANCELLATION POLICY A thirty (30) day notice is required for cancellation. We were a family of 13, 5 kids 3-12 and 6 adults. The house is old but not yucky old. It is great! Fully stocked, body wash, shampoo and conditioner in every shower including the TWO in the garage! There is tons of beach equipment including sand toys, beach chairs, boogie boards AND fins! The kitchen is also totally stocked with cooking stuff and eating stuff. The TWO refrigerators were great too! All rooms had nice beds with clean linens and PLENTY of bathroom towels AND beach towels! The description is correct about the railings and we were “all hands on deck” when the 3 year old was up and about but never had a problem. The tv room has a ping pong table also! And on top of all that, the location is super outstanding, easy walk into town and right on the beach. We would and just might return yearly! ##### paul f. It does not get much better in Del Mar, CA. The management was very responsive and helpful. The beach is excellent: surf directly in front, beach vollyball, with outside and inside (garage) showers for post-beach activites. Walking distance to shopping and restaurants. Plenty of parking. Read the description very carefully, it is accurate.The house, furniture and amentities are very old and tired. The layout is odd, no access directly onto the beach patio. The place needs a facelift, especially furniture, paint and windows. The windows are difficult to see out of to the beach, paint is peeling everywhere especially on the outside and balconies and the furniture is not comfortable. Most of the rooms have single beds, so it sleeps a lot of people, just not couples. Its great for families with lots of kids. Overall, this is a beach house with a location that cannot be better. I have stayed in dozens of rentals like this . Where this house really lacked was in “amenities.“ There was no user manual to explain the house, there was no coffee, even a small amount, to get you through to the next morning. There was no sense of welcome or personal touches from the host. The fireplace was dirty - no firewood on site. I had to text management regarding where to buy firewood. This lack of attention was typical: no ice, (the ice maker was broken,) no broom - it’s on a beach, so there’s sand in the house, no soap - It all added up to a lack of good service. But we had a great time, and it’s a lovely location. ##### LISA K. It instantly reminded me of Old Town in San Diego. Absolutely charming with some of the original wood and decors. We had a total of 5 adults and 2 children sleeping there during our stay, and our other immediate family members came by during the day and spent time with us at the beach. This is definitely one of our favorite beach rentals in San Diego and the location was perfect. Even though the house is right next to public entrance to the beach and a lifeguard tower, it didn't bother us, it was still quiet and we still had privacy. We rented this house as a quick getaway and to celebrate our daughters birthday. The house is awesome. Plenty of rooms, lots of beach toys and very well stocked. The location is the best! The bedrooms were a good size. The kitchen is small especially if you have a lot of guest. We were 9 adults and 5 children. You gotta keep a close eye on the little ones. This house is NOT child proof as explained in the rental agreement. There's nothing fancy. The carpets / furnishings are old and the house is stuffy and warm. The fans made it bearable. Putting all this aside, the view was amazing. You are 5 steps away from the beach. The beach is clean. People kept their distance. We felt safe-Covid wise. So, if you're looking for a house on the beach, that accommodates a large family, with no frills, this is the place. ##### Lila M. It had more amenities than we ever could have expected, including coffee, seasoning/spices. Dry good items for baking, even. Lots of beach towels and a close line on the side of the house for outside drying of said towels and swimsuits. There was a complication with the dryer, but the management company was quick to try and resolve it. It needed a replacement and I am confident that will occur soon. We left before it took place, but they were so accommodating!! I will use VRBO again and also the house. I recommend it to others as well. ##### Kira T. The house itself is very "vintage" on the inside. The layout of the rooms is totally adequate and its a great place to spend a few days on the sand. Pros: Location on the Sand Cost for Location Lots of sleeping spaces Ping Pong Room! Lots of Parking Cons Very "vintage" - 1940s maybe? Kitchen needs upgrade Access to deck area - needs to be opened up Smells like Old Lady (Not Old Spice) Funky layout ##### David R. It's and awesome, large space for larger gathering with views of the ocean. Kitchen may be small, but side room works great as a staging area. Multiple bedrooms, small but personal.
